There has been a growing popularity in Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) over the years to treat chronic wounds and other medical conditions. HBOT chambers deliver 100% oxygen that’s 2-3 % higher than normal air pressure helping the lungs to absorb more oxygen thereby healing the tissues and fight infections. HBOT may be used alone or in conjunction with other medical treatments.

HBOT is used to treat the following conditions:

  • Air or gas embolism
  • Gangrene
  • Hearing loss
  • Burns
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Radiation injuries
  • Severe bone or skin infections etc.

During a HBOT procedure, the patient is made to lie in a special chamber while receiving treatment. In a multiplace chamber, designed for use by multiple patients at once, the oxygen treatment will be given via a specialised mask or oxygen hood.

There are a plethora of oxygen chamber configurations available in the market like:

  • Soft lying: A portable soft chamber made of high strength TPU material.
  • Soft sitting: Soft sitting chamber has an adjustable sofa chair.
  • Hard lying: These come with built in therapy options with micro-computer controls. These chambers have oxygen concentrators integrated with air compressor functions.
  • Hard sitting

Benefits/Risks of HBOT:

HBOT helps to heal the body by growing new skin, blood vessels and connective tissues.

The potential risks include:

  • Claustrophobia: Some people might experience anxiety attacks during the treatment due to small, confined spaces of the HBOT chamber.
  • Middle ear injuries like earache, haemorrhage, fluid in ears or eardrum rupture.
  • Sinus congestion
  • Temporary near-sightedness in some patients.
  • Oxygen toxicity in some cases if your lungs absorb too much oxygen.

In general, Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy is a safe treatment with relatively temporary and mild side effects. It is best to receive HBOT from an experienced healthcare provider for an approved condition.
